Fantasy College Hoops: Preview - Week 14

#11 Iowa State (17-5, 7-3) currently sits one game behind Kansas in the Big XII standings. The Cyclones face a pair of ranked opponents (#21 Oklahoma, #15 West Virginia) in Week 14. So the next seven days will likely determine if Iowa State is a true conference contender or destined for another bridesmaid year in the Big XII.

Here's a look at the starting lineups for Week 14.

Fantasy College Hoops: Player of the Month (Jan)

January's Player of the Month award goes to Ohio State's D'Angelo Russell. The Buckeyes needed to replace a trio of starters and nearly 60% of their scoring from a team that struggled to put the ball in the hoop (69ppg) last season, and that's putting it nicely (NCAA rank #207). This year the Buckeyes own a Top 15 offense, averaging 80ppg. The reason? Freshman phenom D'Angelo Russell.

It is difficult to predict how highly-touted freshmen will perform at the collegiate level. Lack of immediate playing time, the rigors of a tough conference schedule and performing against teams with prepared scouting reports and hostile environments can contribute to "hitting the wall" as a freshman. Luckily for the Buckeyes, none of this has applied to Russell thus far. Currently, he leads the team in scoring (19.4ppg), rebounding (5.6rpg) and ranks second on the team in assists (5.2apg) to Shannon Scott (6.6apg), the beneficiary from Russell's offensive prowess.

Armed with one of the smoothest jumpshots in the country, the 6'5 lefty combo guard is the straw that stirs the drink for the Buckeyes. Over his last 8 games, Russell averaged 36+ fantasy points per contest. He closed the month of January as one of the hottest players in the country, posting a pair of versatile double-doubles in wins over #23 Indiana and #16 Maryland.

Given his high ranking (RSCI #16), there wasn't a lot of fanfare during Russell's recruitment. The Louisville, KY product committed to Thad Matta and Ohio State shortly after his high school junior season. And while he came in with an elite scoring reputation, it's been the other areas of his game that have NBA scouts drooling. His ball-handling, decision-making and shot selection are extremely polished and he looks physically ready to play in an NBA backcourt. As of today, Russell has risen all the way to #2 overall in the 2015 mock draft. So despite hinting that he will return for his sophomore campaign, this will likely be Russell's lone season in Columbus.

Congratulations D-Russ! You are January's Player of the Month presented by The Ace of Sports!

Fantasy College Hoops: Preview - Week 12

In case you hadn't heard yet... haha, yeah right! Coach K won his 1,000th game on Sunday against St. John's in Madison Square Garden. Now that we can put all of the #Coach1K buildup and hoopla behind us, let's turn our focus to Week 12 - a critical one for Duke.

The Blue Devils travel to South Bend to take on #8 Notre Dame before a monster showdown against undefeated #2 Virginia on Saturday.

A pair of Week 12 victories could catapult the Blue Devils back towards the top of the ACC standings and throw themselves back into the mix for a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament.

Here's a look at the starting lineups for Week 12.

Fantasy College Hoops: Sunday - Week 11

Getcha Popcorn Ready lived up to their name and put on quite a show in Week 11. The backcourt trio of Utah's Delon Wright, Providence's Kris Dunn and Ohio State's D'Angelo Russell combined for 124+ fantasy points. Week 11 may have only been a head-to-head battle, but when the popcorn's poppin', these studs came to play!

Fantasy College Hoops: Tuesday - Week 11

Wisconsin's Frank Kaminsky (13pts, 11reb, 6ast, 1blk) was Mr. Versatility in the Badgers' 82-50 rout of Iowa on Super Tuesday. The Player of the Year candidate double-doubled and dished out nearly as many assists (6) as the entire Hawkeye team (7).

Fantasy College Hoops: Preview - Week 11

This week's primer is inspired by the final season premiere of my all-time favorite series. After taking a punch in Ames on Saturday night, this week is a major gut-check for the Jayhawks. If Kansas wants to win their 11th consecutive conference title, a pair of Week 11 wins would serve as the perfect building blocks.

Here's a look at the starting lineups for Week 11.

Fantasy College Hoops: Saturday - Week 10

Please Kaminsky, Don't Be Concussed rebounded nicely on the final day of Week 10. Kris Dunn (21pts, 8reb, 7ast, 2stl) stuffed the stat sheet in Providence's 74-65 win at Creighton. The five-star point guard has taken his game to another level in his sophomore campaign and the Friars have the makings of a giant-killer if they can get into the NCAA tourney.

Despite a solid double-double from Jahlil Okafor (15pts, 15reb), Duke had their 41-game home winning streak snapped in blowout fashion on ESPN's Super Tuesday against Miami.

Louisville's 1-2 punch, Montrezl Harrell (11pts, 8reb, 3ast, 3blk) and Terry Rozier (16pts, 3reb, 1ast) combined for 41 fantasy points against Virginia Tech.

Fantasy College Hoops: Preview - Week 10

Week 10 will get off to a delayed start, as the CFP National Championship will have the floor on Monday night. But there are plenty of games on tap to make this one of the most intriguing weeks of the season. ESPN Gameday travels to Ames, IA for the Big XII showdown between #17 Iowa State (12-2) and #12 Kansas (13-2). Here are the other notable games on Saturday:
  • #2 Duke (14-1) vs. #5 Louisville (14-2)
  • #9 Utah (13-2) vs. #7 Arizona (14-2)
  • #14 West Virginia (14-2) vs. #10 Texas (12-4)
Here's a look at the starting lineups for Week 10.

Fantasy College Hoops: Sunday - Week 9

Maybe I'll Do Better dodged a bullet when Frank Kaminsky sat out Wisconsin's game against Rutgers with concussion-like symptoms. Luckily, Duke's Jahlil Okafor (23pts, 12reb, 3stl, 3blk) did enough damage against North Carolina State, posting this week's high score. Both top-five teams fell to unranked foes on the road, in what ended up being a weekend littered with upsets. Despite a team name lacking in creativity, Maybe I'll Do Better ended up quite prophetic after running away with a Week 9 victory.

Here's a look at the final scoreboard and statistics for Week 9.

Fantasy College Hoops: Saturday - Week 9

Louisville's Terry Rozier (25pts, 5reb, 5ast, 3stl) became just the second player of to score 30+ fantasy points in Week 9. Rozier's baseline jumper gave the Cardinals a 1-point lead with :25 left. But Marcus Paige's layup with under :10 to go resulted in a 72-71 victory for the Tar Heels. With the loss, Rick Pitino now falls to 0-6 all-time against North Carolina.

Heading into the final day of Week 9, The Iron Men currently have the lead. But Maybe I'll Do Better's heavy-hitting frontcourt (Wisconsin's Frank Kaminsky, Duke's Jahlil Okafor) make them the clear favorite to overcome the 18-point deficit and walk away with the Week 9 jackpot.

Michigan State's Branden Dawson (14pts, 13reb, 2ast, 2blk, 2stl) helped The Iron Men jump out to an early lead on Monday night. Dawson, the B1G's leading rebounder, recorded his second double-double on the season in the Spartans' 70-50 win over Indiana.

Fantasy College Hoops: Preview - Week 9

Big Monday kicks off Week 9 with a pair of Top 25 matchups. In the opener, #14 Notre Dame (14-1) visits #19 North Carolina (11-3). Then, the Red River Rivalry takes center stage as #18 Oklahoma (10-3) travels to Austin to battle #11 Texas (12-2).

Here's a look at the starting lineups for Week 9.

Fantasy College Hoops: Sunday - Week 8

Heading into the final day of Week 8, Halftime needed 66+ fantasy points between their Harrell/Kaminsky frontcourt. And when the final horn sounded, they left no doubt who the champion was this week.

Louisville's Montrezl Harrell (25pts, 13reb, 1blk) and Wisconsin's Frank Kaminsky (16pts, 10reb, 6ast, 2stl, 1blk) both eclipsed the 40-point mark after posting strong double-doubles in their road conference victories over Wake Forest and Northwestern.

**Side note: I know it's early January, but Notre Dame's Jerian Grant may have already delivered the dunk of the year... he certainly has my vote.

Fantasy College Hoops: Player of the Month (Dec)

December's Player of the Month award goes to California's Tyrone Wallace. After losing 50% of their scoring from last season and hiring Cuonzo Martin away from Knoxville in April, 2014-15 could have easily been tabbed a rebuilding year for the Golden Bears. But that is certainly not the case thus far. They opened the season with a 10-2 record, with their only losses coming to #10 Texas and #6 Wisconsin. Wallace's production on both ends of the floor is the reason why California can battle their way into the top third of the Pac-12 and be that team no top seed wants to face in the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament.

Usually, the biggest jump in production for college players occurs between their freshmen and sophomore seasons. But in this case, Wallace took an extra year to blossom. The reason? Martin named him the starting point guard after playing his first two seasons off the ball. Although Wallace is learning the position on the fly, this will accelerate his development. And when sophomore wing Jabari Bird missed the entire month of December after suffering a stress fracture, Wallace shouldered even more of the offensive workload.

In those seven games, Wallace averaged nearly 30 fantasy points. He shot 55-for-108 from the floor and grabbed over 9 rebounds per game. On the season, he is shooting 50% from the floor and 44% from downtown. Consistency is key in fantasy college hoops and Wallace has been one of the best producers at his position this season.

After coming from relative recruiting obscurity (RSCI #94 in 2012), the 6'5 junior should get an opportunity to play at the next level. The lanky lefty has great size for his position and a highly coveted, freakish wingspan. Today, Wallace is slotted as a borderline first round pick (#28) in the 2015 mock draft. If he returns for his senior campaign, he could solidify his draft status and even play his way into the middle of the first round.

But for now, congratulations T-Wall! You are December's Player of the Month presented by The Ace of Sports!

Fantasy College Hoops: Friday - Week 8

Friday night was a Pac-12 fantasy hoops showcase. The trio of Utah's Delon Wright (11pts, 2reb, 10ast, 1stl, 1blk), California's Tyrone Wallace (19pts, 8reb, 4ast, 4stl) and Washington State's Josh Hawkinson (11pts, 15reb, 2ast, 2blk) combined for nearly 90 fantasy points.

After capping the comeback against Crazy Legs, The Hammer is the current leader with 163+ total fantasy points this week.
