Fantasy College Hoops: Update - Week 8

[Monday] The Game of the Week between Boilers and Gordon Bombay saw Jerome Randle (16pts, 3reb, 4ast) and California cruise to a 85-51 win over Utah Valley St. It got out of hand early, so Randle didn't play much. It was the first time he logged less than 30 minutes in over a month. With only a four-point lead, and two minutes and change left, Ed Davis (11pts, 15reb) helped North Carolina slip past a gutsy Rutgers squad. This was Davis' third double-double in the month of December, and he matched a season-high 15 rebounds. Fellow Tar Heel Deon Thompson (14pts, 5reb, 1stl) is officially in a slump for Chalmers Chiefers. After averaging 17.7 points and 8.9 rebounds in the month of November (7 games), Thompson's production has fallen to 11.5 points and 6.2 rebounds in December (6 games).

[Tuesday] The Game of the Week had the night off, but there were plenty of great performances to go around last night. Cole Aldrich (11pts, 14reb, 1ast, 6blk, 3stl) recorded his second straight double-double for Chalmers Chiefers, as #1 Kansas cruised to their 50th straight win at Allen Fieldhouse, a 30-point victory over Belmont. Paul Rudd > Ashley Judd jumped out to a big lead, with great games from Derrick Favors (13pts, 11reb, 2ast, 3blk, 4stl) and Landry Fields (24pts, 9reb, 4ast, 5stl). They needed a clutch, game-winning jumper from Da'Sean Butler (17pts, 7reb, 3ast) with :02 left, but West Virginia remained unbeaten after defeating a pesky Marquette team. Butler was clutch, but the man of the match was Devin Ebanks (19pts, 8reb, 4ast, 1stl), who got his first start on the season, thanks to his lazy owner... Aids. But last night's high score belonged to one of Aids' opponents. Despite a controversial win of Week 7 POW, Wesley Johnson (20pts, 19reb, 2ast, 5blk, 1stl) backed it up. Johnson ripped down a career-high 19 rebounds against Seton Hall, in a game jam-packed with highlights. With their win last night, Syracuse now moves to 13-0 on the season.

[Wednesday] Three starters from the Game of the Week saw action last night. Boilers' Joe Trapani (9pts, 8reb, 3ast, 1stl) did not have one of his better games, going 4-12 from the floor. Gordon Bombay countered with Sylven Landesberg (19pts, 6reb, 4ast, 1blk) and Trey Thompkins (12pts, 13reb, 2ast, 1blk). With most of the remaining players still waiting their turn, this matchup is still up for grabs. JaMychal Green (19pts, 8reb, 2ast, 5blk, 1stl) strung together successful back-to-back starts for Chalmers Chiefers. But their opponent was responsible for last night's high score: Mike Davis (20pts, 17reb, 3ast). Davis now has four double-doubles in his last six starts for WGP.

[Thursday] Gordon Bombay needed a big game out of his first round pick, Kyle Singler (20pts, 5reb, 5ast, 1blk, 1stl), and he got just that. Fellow Dukie Jon Scheyer (19pts, 4reb, 11ast, 1stl) was Thursday's high scorer, as the Blue Devils dominated the Pennsylvania Quakers, 114-55. It wasn't a pretty game, but Oklahoma's Tiny Gallon (8pts, 5reb, 1ast) shattered the backboard during their beating in Spokane at the hands of Gonzaga.

[Friday] The only league game on New Year's Day was a battle of two unbeaten teams. E'Twaun Moore (15pts, 2reb, 3ast, 2stl) and the Boilermakers delivered a 77-62 beatdown to West Virginia in West Lafayette. In a losing effort, Kevin Jones (12pts, 8reb, 1blk) was the leading rebounder for the Mountaineers. But he struggled mightily while trying to guard Purdue's JaJuan Johnson (25pts, 10reb, 1ast, 2blk) who has unfortunately become irrelevant this season, thanks to Booo Joel.

[Saturday] With their backs up against the wall, Boilers' stars came up big. Tasmin Mitchell (19pts, 12reb, 2ast, 1stl) and Stanley Robinson (22pts, 16reb, 1ast, 2blk, 2stl) both recorded double-doubles. Going into the final day of Week 8, the Game of the Week has still yet to be decided. Though their teams came up short this week, Aids' Jerome Dyson (20pts, 2reb, 10ast, 2blk, 2stl) and Neenan's Warriors Ekpe Udoh (12pts, 20reb, 3ast, 2blk) both recorded their second double-doubles.

[Sunday] There were some fantastic finishes to close out Week 8. It was a forgettable day for Jamine Peterson (14pts, 5reb), but Greivis Vasquez (24pts, 5reb, 6ast, 1blk, 2stl) secured the Game of the Week victory for Boilers. After trailing by a seemingly insurmountable deficit of 49+ points, Al-Farouq Aminu (26pts, 18reb, 2ast, 3blk, 2stl) dropped 51 in Wake Forest's double-overtime thriller against Xavier in the Skip Prosser Classic, capping an unbelievable comeback for The Pink Jellybeans.

Fantasy College Hoops: Recap - Week 7

Here are the storylines from Week 7: Four forfeits made for a disappointing holiday weekend of hoops. Hopefully some owners return with a newfound focus... After questioning his team's scoring power, Boilers has to be pleasantly surprised. His squad has won three of their last four, and is currently second in overall points scored. Despite a player advantage, The Pink Jellybeans lost for the second time in as many weeks. Time to pick up the pieces and hold onto that last playoff spot. But is it too late? Here's a look at the player rankings through Week 7:

Fantasy College Hoops: Update - Week 7

[Monday] It appears a handful of teams checked out early for the holidays. Only five lineups were turned in before the deadline. Nevertheless, let's hope that teams continue to fight the good fight the rest of the way. I will definitely take these recent actions into consideration for the upcoming power rankings. Boilers and Neenan's Warriors were the only teams with active players last night. Coincidentally, they are playing each other this week. It's been a disappointing season for Arizona, who squeaked by Lipscomb in overtime last night. Nic Wise (26pts, 3reb, 3ast, 4stl) hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer, improving the Wildcats record to 5-5 on the year. Devan Downey (16pts, 3reb, 8ast, 7stl) five-finger discounted Furman all game long, with seven thefts. But Monday's high scorer belonged to Boilers, as Jamine Peterson (25pts, 13reb, 1ast, 1blk) logged his third straight double-double, giving him seven total this season.

[Tuesday] After last night's games, all but one matchup (Boilers vs. Neenan's Warriors) has been decided. God's on my side got another double-double out of Luke Harangody (20pts, 11reb, 5ast, 1blk). Their 1-player penalty appears to be insignificant now. Damion James (23pts, 13reb, 2ast, 1blk, 1stl) led the Longhorns to a convincing 79-68 win over #9 Michigan St. What slump? Quincy Pondexter (25pts, 13reb, 2ast, 3blk) broke out of his scoring rut after Texas A&M's Donald Sloan broke his right tibia and fibula. On a lighter note... Wesley Johnson (19pts, 11reb, 2ast, 2blk, 2stl), the Corsicana Kid, paced the undefeated Orange in their 92-60 blowout win over Oakland.

[Wednesday] After a slow start, Gordon Bombay bounced back with a vengeance. Thanks to double-doubles by Sylven Landesberg (14pts, 12reb, 6ast, 1stl) and Trey Thompkins (35pts, 15reb, 1blk), Bombay remains tied for first place. Chalmers Chiefers got an unexpected monster game from JaMychal Green (27pts, 13reb, 3blk, 1stl) against Mercer. While Samardo Samuels (29pts, 15reb, 2ast, 1stl) was just icing on the cake of God's on my side's Week 7 victory.

[Thursday/Friday/Saturday] No games/players of record.

[Sunday] Only three starting players remained going into the final day of Week 7. And each of them put up some eye-popping numbers. As if they needed any more points, Boilers ran up the score with season-high scoring outings from Greivis Vasquez (26pts, 8reb, 5ast, 1stl) and  Stanley Robinson (29pts, 5reb, 1ast, 1blk, 2stl). The Pink Jellybeans have lost three straight, but place no blame on Jimmy Butler (16pts, 8reb, 5ast, 2stl), who was responsible for over 30% of the team's scoring this week.

Fantasy College Hoops: Recap - Week 6

Here are the storylines for Week 6: After this week's Game of the Week, there are no unbeaten teams remaining. Crimson & Bluebloods tamed the beast of the league, Gordon Bombay. This forced a three-way tie atop the standings between the two and Paul Rudd > Ashley Judd, who is riding a four-game winning streak. After Maria Koppen pulled out a victory, Booo Joel is now the only winless team in the league. With three straight forfeits, it's only a matter of time before rumblings of a winless season surface. Here's a look at the player rankings through Week 6:

Fantasy College Hoops: Update - Week 6

[Monday] Unfortunately, three teams did not submit lineups at all yesterday. It looks like some have given up. But for the rest of us with an ounce of pride, let's make the rest of this season a memorable one. Only two players were in action last night, and both had solid outings. God's on my side jumped out to a big lead, as Gani Lawal (29pts, 7reb, 1blk, 1stl) and Georgia Tech overpowered Chattanooga on the front line. The Game of the Week nearly had a player penalty. But I couldn't stand the idea of having an asterisk next to this potential win for my squad. Storm Warren (14pts, 12reb, 1ast, 2stl) has three double-doubles in his last three games. Only a 2-7 performance from the stripe could slow down this Bayou Bengal, because SE Louisiana sure couldn't.

[Tuesday] We're only two days into the week, but a handful of matchups appear to be all but over. Neenan's Warriors and Chalmers Chiefers are too talented to blow a 2-man advantage at this point in the season. God's on my side has gotten off to one of the best starts of the year. Jon Scheyer (36pts, 8reb, 9ast, 1blk, 1stl) buried seven threes in Duke's 113-68 rout of Gardner-Webb. WGP got no help from LaceDarius Dunn (3pts, 2reb, 1ast), fouling out in only 17 minutes of action. But Baylor teammate Tweety Carter (27pts, 4reb, 8ast, 4stl) scored 27 points for the second straight game. It's still early in the Game of the Week, but Gordon Bombay struggled out of the gate last night. Kyle Singler (11pts, 5reb, 3ast, 1blk, 1stl) was held scoreless in the first half. And Damion James (8pts, 9reb, 1ast, 1stl) was hardly needed in Texas' blowout of Texas-Pan American in embarrassing fashion.

[Wednesday] Trevon Hughes (20pts, 6reb, 3ast, 4stl) helped Gordon Bombay get back on the right track last night. With a win wrapped up, Neenan's Warriors continue to pile on the points. Dominique Jones (27pts, 6reb, 2ast, 2blk, 5stl) kept his hot streak alive against Central Florida. Although benching Dwayne Collins (20pts, 15reb, 2ast), who would have given him 40+ points, doesn't look so smart now. Paul Rudd > Ashley Judd's Derrick Favors (15pts, 11reb, 1ast, 3blk, 4stl) has four double-doubles in his last five games. Things are definitely starting to click for the bluechipper from Atlanta. But last night's greatest game came from Clemson's Trevor Booker (13pts, 12reb, 9ast, 3blk), who narrowly missed a triple-double. We haven't heard his name much this year, mainly because Maria Koppen is 50/50 on turning in lineups. Despite a 1-man advantage, The Pink Jellybeans have a lot of catching up to do, heading into this weekend's games.

[Thursday] With most of the matchups still in the balance, this weekend is shaping up to be an ultimate marathon of hoops. Last night featured two players, who both led their teams to close wins. Tasmin Mitchell (27pts, 6reb, 3ast, 1blk, 2stl) helped Boilers bounce back from a dreadful start. He drained all three of his three-pointers, including the game-winner with :36 left. The Game of the Week has been quite the battle so far. Crimson & Bluebloods' Tracy Smith (21pts, 8reb, 1ast, 2blk, 1stl) struggled from the charity stripe (3-7), but made two clutch baskets down the stretch, putting the Wolfpack ahead for good.

[Friday] No players/games of record.

[Saturday] With finals week in the rear view mirror, Saturday's games were jammed with players. The shootout between Boilers and Paul Rudd > Ashley Judd came down to the wire. Malcolm Delaney (26pts, 4reb, 6ast, 2stl) and Landry Fields (24pts, 9reb, 5ast, 1stl) were scoring machines in their games. The Pink Jellybeans' Herb Pope (13pts, 11reb, 4ast, 2blk, 4stl) continued his hot streak with another double-double. But today's difference maker was Alex Stepheson (19pts, 15reb, 1ast), who now gives Paul Rudd > Ashley Judd a commanding lead.

[Sunday] Well, Boilers gave it a hell of a shot... but it just wasn't enough. Joe Trapani (21pts, 10reb, 2ast, 4blk, 3stl), earned his second double-double on the season, while recording season highs in blocks and steals. With the third highest score for Week 6, Boilers just caught a bad break in matchups. Even though The Pink Jellybeans had a man advantage, Al-Farouq Aminu (18pts, 13reb, 3ast, 1blk, 2stl) couldn't complete a comeback against Maria Koppen.

Fantasy College Hoops: Recap - Week 5

Here are the storylines for Week 5: With five forfeits this week, it appears that just submitting a lineup might be enough to make the playoffs. As commissioner, I am not going to beg people to play. But I have no problem questioning teams' fanhood whenever necessary. On a bright note, Neenan's Warriors got their first win on the year. Though it was a forfeit, their scoring totals were respectable. After falling in the opening week, Crimson & Bluebloods have rattled off four straight wins. They have led the league in scoring in each of the last two weeks. A collision with undefeated Gordon Bombay awaits, next week's Game of the Week. Here's a look at the player rankings through Week 5:

Fantasy College Hoops: Update - Week 5

[Monday] Unfortunately, Week 5 started out slowly, with four teams failing to turn in lineups before the deadline. You have to wonder if some of them have what it takes to make it through the rest of the season. Hopefully the intensity picks up, because it's a little early to be throwing in the towel... With only one starter (and two head coaches) in action last night, the scoring wasn't very high. Although, Rick Barnes and Texas clobbered Long Beach St 107-74, covering the 21.5-point spread easily. It always helps when your head coach can give your team a scoring boost like that. [Tuesday] Slow and steady wins the race, but I'm sure this isn't what teams had in mind. The player penalties were increased to two players, and most of their opponents should be feeling good about their chances now. Paul Rudd > Ashley Judd's Alex Stepheson (10pts, 10reb, 7blk, 1stl) had a decent game, but 8 turnovers hurt his double-double bonus in a big way. His Trojan teammate, Nikola Vucevic (14pts, 15reb, 3ast, 1blk, 2stl), had a solid debut for WGP against Sacramento St. All but one of WGP's players will be done after tonight's games. So we'll see just how big of a lead they can accumulate, as only one of Crimson & Bluebloods' starters will be in the books after Thursday's games. [Wednesday] Of the 14 players in action last night, only two scored more than 30. The Pink Jellybeans got off to a fast start, as Scottie Reynolds (22pts, 6reb, 5ast, 1blk, 4stl) buried 4-5 shots and 12-14 free throws in a win against St. Joseph's. Unfortunately for Boilers, last night's high scorer was on his bench. Nic Wise (24pts, 6reb, 5ast, 2stl), who has not started since Week 2, made an impressive bid to return to the starting lineup. [Thursday] The "Game of the Week" between WGP and Crimson & Bluebloods is shaping up to be quite a battle. All but one of WGP's players have played, while Crimson & Bluebloods saw their first player in action last night. Wesley Johnson (17pts, 10reb, 2ast, 1blk, 1stl) had a quiet double-double in Syracuse's 85-73 win over Florida in a battle of unbeatens. [Friday] Tennessee got a blowout win against Middle Tennessee St, but Tyler Smith (7pts, 4reb, 5ast) continues to be a non-factor. Chalmers Chiefers is obviously licking his chops for the return of DePaul's Mac Koshwal, Smith's likely replacement in the starting lineup. On that same note, Paul Rudd > Ashley Judd continues to battle the injury bug as well. CBS Sports reported that North Carolina's Marcus Ginyard will sit out against Presbyterian (left foot injury) on Saturday. Luckily his opponent, none other than Maria Koppen, failed to submit a lineup and capitalize on this walking wounded squad. [Saturday] Today's games determined most of the outcomes for matchups in Week 5. And the Game of the Week is all but over. Thanks to some big-time performances from Ed Davis (20pts, 10reb, 3ast, 5blk, 2stl) and Storm Warren (21pts, 16reb, 1blk, 2stl) Crimson & Bluebloods looks to have victory in hand over WGP. Gordon Bombay didn't need it, but a monster effort by Damion James (21pts, 16reb, 2ast, 3stl) was just icing on the cake for the league's lone undefeated team. No players matched the production of a pair of Seton Hall Pirates, however. Jeremy Hazell (33pts, 12reb, 5ast, 4stl) put Neenan's Warriors in the win column for the first time. While The Pink Jellybeans' Herb Pope (15pts, 20reb, 4ast, 3blk, 1stl) made it an uphill battle for Chalmers Chiefers going into the final day. [Sunday] Chalmers Chiefers might want to think about changing his name to Captain Comeback. Despite the efforts of Al-Farouq Aminu (11pts, 10reb, 1ast) to maintain The Pink Jellybeans' lead, DeShawn Sims (23pts, 12reb, 4ast, 1blk, 2stl) helped Chalmers Chiefers pull out the win by a nose. It's a shame that one of these teams had to lose, especially when you consider there were five teams that essentially forfeited this week. Continue reading for a look at the current scoreboard:

You may submit them as a comment to this post, or reply to my email with the template. Whatever works for you! Here are the matchups and starting lineups for Week 5:

Boilers (2-2) vs. God's on my side (2-2)
Booo Joel (0-4) vs. Gordon Bombay (4-0)
The Pink Jellybeans (3-1) vs. Chalmers Chiefers (2-2)
* WGP (3-1) vs. Crimson & Bluebloods (3-1)
Aids (2-2) vs. Neenan's Warriors (0-4)
Maria Koppen (0-4) vs. Paul Rudd > Ashley Judd (3-1)

Fantasy College Hoops: Recap - Week 4

Here are the storylines for Week 4: Aids had some tough luck, posting 150+ points while playing the league's high scorer, Boilers (189.75). Despite leading the league in overall scoring, Aids is just 2-2 on the year. The three 0-4 teams are putting themselves in quite a hole. But there is still plenty of time to make up ground and fight for that last playoff spot. And it's going to be an interesting next two months for Paul Rudd > Ashley Judd, without Evan Turner. Here's a look at the player rankings through Week 4:

Fantasy College Hoops: Update - Week 4

[Monday] Only a half-dozen players saw time last night, but most got their teams off to a solid start. Greg Monroe (19pts, 11reb, 3ast, 1blk) finally looked like a leader for the Hoyas. Though he only hit 8 of 19 shots, Aids should be encouraged that he's becoming more of a selfish player. He's far too talented to defer to his teammates any longer. Wesley Johnson (19pts, 9reb, 5ast, 2stl) outscored Colgate by himself in the first half. Luckily for Maria Koppen, he only played 23 minutes and finished just short of a double-double. And I'm not sure why Louisville allows Kentucky to take over Freedom Hall for an annual cameo, but they put on quite a show last night. Patrick Patterson (17pts, 9reb, 2ast, 1blk) got points easily thanks to Kentucky's trigger man John Wall (12pts, 4reb, 14ast, 6stl), last night's high scorer. [Tuesday] Thanks to Booo Joel's lack of a lineup, God's on my side probably clinched a win last night. Luke Harangody (27pts, 12reb, 1ast, 1blk, 2stl) helped Notre Dame beat up on Idaho St. A shorthanded LSU squad got double-doubles from both Tasmin Mitchell (26pts, 10reb, 1ast, 2stl) and Storm Warren (18pts, 16reb, 2ast, 2blk, 2stl), as they willed the Bayou Bengals to victory over Louisiana-Lafayette. The Big Ten/ACC Challenge was in full swing last night: In Maryland's win over Indiana, Greivis Vasquez (23pts, 5reb, 8ast, 1blk) hit 13-14 from the stripe, and scored more than 20 points for the first time this season. But the headliner was a rematch of last year's National Championship. It was close, but North Carolina defeated Michigan State for the third time in twelve months, this time 89-82. Ed Davis (22pts, 6reb, 2ast, 1blk, 1stl) continued his hot streak, but Deon Thompson (14pts, 4reb, 1ast, 1blk, 1stl) did not fare nearly as well (3 fouls, 5 turnovers). As for Chalmers Chiefers, his remaining five starters are all in action on Wednesday night. Can he hold onto his early lead against Gordon Bombay for the rest of the week? It should be interesting... [Wednesday] Well, it only took eleven years for the Big Televen to finally win one. Tied 4-5 in the series, the Big Ten swept the last two games, including an upset of #5 Duke at the hands of Wisconsin. Kyle Singler (28pts, 6reb, 3ast, 1blk, 1stl) was unstoppable in the first half. But the Badgers got just enough stops down the stretch to pull off the upset. The #1 Jayhawks used a 36-0 run (1 shy of the NCAA record) to more than triple-up Alcorn St, 98-31. It was the fewest points ever allowed in Allen Fieldhouse. Cole Aldrich (13pts, 16reb, 1ast, 3blk, 2stl) and Xavier Henry (18pts, 3reb, 1blk, 4stl) scored 31 by themselves. The only bad news for Chalmers Chiefers, the rest of his players only combined for 32.25 FCH points. Tyler Smith (15pts, 3reb, 4ast, 1stl), DeShawn Sims (4pts, 4reb) and JaMychal Green (7pts, 5reb, 3ast, 2blk) were all held far below their averages. But for now, the Game of the Week is a waiting game. And it gets started tonight, with Gordon Bombay's Damion James. [Thursday] The Big XII/Pac-10 Hardwood Series is a one-sided contest so far. As of last night's games, the Big XII holds a 5-0 lead. In this week's Game of the Week, Gordon Bombay is in the driver's seat after Damion James (19pts, 9reb, 1ast, 1blk, 1stl) led Texas to victory over Southern Cal. And it was pretty obvious that Maria Koppen won't go down without a fight. Last night's high score belonged to Tweety Carter (27pts, 4reb, 3ast, 1stl) as Baylor took down the Sun Devils in Tempe, Arizona. [Friday] Only one starter was in action last night - The Pink Jellybeans' Cory Higgins (15pts, 3reb, 3ast, 1blk, 1stl). Colorado looks much improved from a season ago, but Oregon State got the Pac-10 off the schnide. They notched their first victory of the Big XII/Pac-10 Hardwood Series. [Saturday] Week 4 is winding down, and most of the matchups are nearly complete. Mike Davis (16pts, 12reb, 1ast, 1stl) did his best to make up ground for WGP, but they fell short against Paul Rudd > Ashley Judd. Unfortunately, Evan Turner (4pts, 1reb, 1ast, 1stl) will miss the next eight weeks after sustaining multiple spine fractures in Ohio State's game against Eastern Michigan. God's on my side put an exclamation point on his forfeit victory against Booo Joel, as Jarvis Varnado (14pts, 8reb, 1ast, 4blk, 3stl) and Mississippi St broke the century mark against St. Bonaventure, 103-53. Gordon Bombay clinched a win in the Game of the Week, and Trevon Hughes (20pts, 7reb, 4ast, 2blk, 1stl) is quickly becoming a consistent contributor. Saturday's high score belonged to The Pink Jellybeans' Jimmy Butler (19pts, 12reb, 1ast, 2stl), who closed the door on a Neenan's Warriors' comeback with his third double-double on the year. [Sunday] Aids made a valiant attempt at a comeback, riding a near triple-double from Jerome Dyson (24pts, 14reb, 9ast, 2blk, 3stl). But in the end, Boilers held onto his lead comfortably with a solid day from Quincy Pondexter (20pts, 7reb, 4ast, 2blk, 3stl). Continue reading for a look at the current scoreboard:
