Fantasy College Hoops: Update - Week 8
[Monday] The Game of the Week between Boilers and Gordon Bombay saw Jerome Randle (16pts, 3reb, 4ast) and California cruise to a 85-51 win over Utah Valley St. It got out of hand early, so Randle didn't play much. It was the first time he logged less than 30 minutes in over a month. With only a four-point lead, and two minutes and change left, Ed Davis (11pts, 15reb) helped North Carolina slip past a gutsy Rutgers squad. This was Davis' third double-double in the month of December, and he matched a season-high 15 rebounds. Fellow Tar Heel Deon Thompson (14pts, 5reb, 1stl) is officially in a slump for Chalmers Chiefers. After averaging 17.7 points and 8.9 rebounds in the month of November (7 games), Thompson's production has fallen to 11.5 points and 6.2 rebounds in December (6 games).
[Tuesday] The Game of the Week had the night off, but there were plenty of great performances to go around last night. Cole Aldrich (11pts, 14reb, 1ast, 6blk, 3stl) recorded his second straight double-double for Chalmers Chiefers, as #1 Kansas cruised to their 50th straight win at Allen Fieldhouse, a 30-point victory over Belmont. Paul Rudd > Ashley Judd jumped out to a big lead, with great games from Derrick Favors (13pts, 11reb, 2ast, 3blk, 4stl) and Landry Fields (24pts, 9reb, 4ast, 5stl). They needed a clutch, game-winning jumper from Da'Sean Butler (17pts, 7reb, 3ast) with :02 left, but West Virginia remained unbeaten after defeating a pesky Marquette team. Butler was clutch, but the man of the match was Devin Ebanks (19pts, 8reb, 4ast, 1stl), who got his first start on the season, thanks to his lazy owner... Aids. But last night's high score belonged to one of Aids' opponents. Despite a controversial win of Week 7 POW, Wesley Johnson (20pts, 19reb, 2ast, 5blk, 1stl) backed it up. Johnson ripped down a career-high 19 rebounds against Seton Hall, in a game jam-packed with highlights. With their win last night, Syracuse now moves to 13-0 on the season.
[Wednesday] Three starters from the Game of the Week saw action last night. Boilers' Joe Trapani (9pts, 8reb, 3ast, 1stl) did not have one of his better games, going 4-12 from the floor. Gordon Bombay countered with Sylven Landesberg (19pts, 6reb, 4ast, 1blk) and Trey Thompkins (12pts, 13reb, 2ast, 1blk). With most of the remaining players still waiting their turn, this matchup is still up for grabs. JaMychal Green (19pts, 8reb, 2ast, 5blk, 1stl) strung together successful back-to-back starts for Chalmers Chiefers. But their opponent was responsible for last night's high score: Mike Davis (20pts, 17reb, 3ast). Davis now has four double-doubles in his last six starts for WGP.
[Thursday] Gordon Bombay needed a big game out of his first round pick, Kyle Singler (20pts, 5reb, 5ast, 1blk, 1stl), and he got just that. Fellow Dukie Jon Scheyer (19pts, 4reb, 11ast, 1stl) was Thursday's high scorer, as the Blue Devils dominated the Pennsylvania Quakers, 114-55. It wasn't a pretty game, but Oklahoma's Tiny Gallon (8pts, 5reb, 1ast) shattered the backboard during their beating in Spokane at the hands of Gonzaga.
[Friday] The only league game on New Year's Day was a battle of two unbeaten teams. E'Twaun Moore (15pts, 2reb, 3ast, 2stl) and the Boilermakers delivered a 77-62 beatdown to West Virginia in West Lafayette. In a losing effort, Kevin Jones (12pts, 8reb, 1blk) was the leading rebounder for the Mountaineers. But he struggled mightily while trying to guard Purdue's JaJuan Johnson (25pts, 10reb, 1ast, 2blk) who has unfortunately become irrelevant this season, thanks to Booo Joel.
[Saturday] With their backs up against the wall, Boilers' stars came up big. Tasmin Mitchell (19pts, 12reb, 2ast, 1stl) and Stanley Robinson (22pts, 16reb, 1ast, 2blk, 2stl) both recorded double-doubles. Going into the final day of Week 8, the Game of the Week has still yet to be decided. Though their teams came up short this week, Aids' Jerome Dyson (20pts, 2reb, 10ast, 2blk, 2stl) and Neenan's Warriors Ekpe Udoh (12pts, 20reb, 3ast, 2blk) both recorded their second double-doubles.
[Sunday] There were some fantastic finishes to close out Week 8. It was a forgettable day for Jamine Peterson (14pts, 5reb), but Greivis Vasquez (24pts, 5reb, 6ast, 1blk, 2stl) secured the Game of the Week victory for Boilers. After trailing by a seemingly insurmountable deficit of 49+ points, Al-Farouq Aminu (26pts, 18reb, 2ast, 3blk, 2stl) dropped 51 in Wake Forest's double-overtime thriller against Xavier in the Skip Prosser Classic, capping an unbelievable comeback for The Pink Jellybeans.
