Fantasy College Hoops: Update - Week 12

[Monday] Week 12's Game of the week doesn't feature two heavyweights. But with the final playoff spot likely on the line, it will be interesting to follow the battle between WGP (5-6) and The Pink Jellybeans (5-6). In a last minute roster change, WGP picked up Marcus Morris (17pts, 9reb, 1ast, 1blk), who has been #2 Kansas' leading scorer in conference play. That now makes two Jayhawks on his roster, as Xavier Henry (9pts, 7reb, 2ast, 1blk, 2stl) battles through a recent shooting slump. Phog Allen Fieldhouse was rocking for last night's Border War. Cole Aldrich (12pts, 16reb, 2ast, 7blk) and the Jayhawks mopped the floor with Missouri. While in Big Monday's early game, Wesley Johnson (14pts, 9reb, 2ast, 4blk, 3stl) stuffed the stat sheet, as Jim Boeheim and #4 Syracuse (-4) recovered from an early 14-0 deficit to blow out their rival #7 Georgetown, 73-56.

[Tuesday] Two players saw action last night from the Game of the week. Lazar Hayward (12pts, 12reb, 2ast, 1blk, 2stl) helped Marquette stop the bleeding of losing three of their last four, with a resounding 82-59 win over Rutgers. WGP's other starter didn't fare so well... LaceDarius Dunn (9pts, 1reb, 5ast) posted a goose egg, shooting 3-13 from the floor and failing to hit a three-pointer (0-4) for just the second time all season (0-4 vs. Arizona State 12/3). Dunn's counterpart, Jacob Pullen (25pts, 2reb, 4ast, 1blk) was last night's high scorer, burying 6 three-pointers and guided Kansas State to a gutsy 76-74 win. Unfortunately for Neenan's Warriors, Pullen was riding the pine this week. And it looks like ESPN is going to have to find a new graphic to run 24/7, after non-stop coverage of Kentucky's potential undefeated season. Just 36 hours after being annointed the country's #1 team, John Calipari and the Wildcats were knocked off their throne by unranked South Carolina 68-62.

[Wednesday] Last night, The Pink Jellybeans failed to take advantage of a slow start by WGP in the Game of the week. Scottie Reynolds (17pts, 1reb, 1ast, 3stl) and Avery Bradley (14pts, 3reb, 1ast) were one-dimensional in their games. On the other hand, Bradley's teammate Damion James (28pts, 13reb, 1stl) hit a season-high 12 shots against Texas Tech. God's on my side was looking to lay a beatdown on Aids this week, and that is likely to happen after another solid effort from Jon Scheyer (22pts, 4reb, 5ast, 3stl). So far, three Aids starters have averaged less than 15 fantasy points, so this weekend could end up being a bloodbath. But the most successful team from last night's games was Paul Rudd > Ashley Judd. Evan Turner (16pts, 12reb, 7ast, 1blk, 3stl) recorded this third straight double-double, making 9 in 15 games. In a losing effortKemba Walker (17pts, 8reb, 7ast, 3stl) pulled down a season-high 8 rebounds while dropping 7 dimes, and did not commit a turnover for the first time all season.

[Thursday] The Game of the week between The Pink Jellybeans and WGP is officially a low-scoring slugfest. Nikola Vucevic (12pts, 8reb, 3blk) made a season-high two three-pointers, but Southern Cal only scored 45 points against an equally terrible Oregon St team. Al-Farouq Aminu (15pts, 8reb, 1blk, 2stl) and Herb Pope (5pts, 17reb, 1ast, 1stl) had decent games, but didn't pay attention to detail. They combined to go 2-8 from the free throw line, while committing 8 personal fouls and 3 turnovers. Looking ahead to this weekend, it's likely that whichever team manages to break 100 total points will even their record at 6-6.

Two teams having no problem lighting up the scoreboard are Neenan's Warriors and Paul Rudd > Ashley Judd. Unfortunately, they are playing each other this week... Neenan's Warriors was heavily invested in South Florida's second straight overtime win. The scoring duel between Dominique Jones (28pts, 4reb, 3ast, 1blk) and Jeremy Hazell (28pts, 3reb, 1ast, 1blk, 1stl) was quite the spectacle. And Courtney Fortson (35pts, 7reb, 4ast, 2stl) carried Arkansas to a 67-62 win over Mississippi St down the stretch. He bounced back from a brutal ankle injury to score a career-high 35 points, after managing just 3 points before halftime. Refusing to sit back and watch, Paul Rudd > Ashley Judd posted Thursday's high score: Landry Fields (31pts, 11reb, 1ast, 1blk) recorded the only double-double on the night, and has scored 63 points and pulled down 19 rebounds in his last two starts.

[Friday] No players/games of record.

[Saturday] None of the players in the Game of the week scored more than 27 points, but it was still a great matchup all week! Trailing by 9 points, Mike Rosario (24pts, 7reb, 1ast) buried four three-pointers, helping WGP edge out The Pink Jellybeans and Sherron Collins (16pts, 1reb, 4ast).

The shootout between Neenan's Warriors and Paul Rudd > Ashley Judd is coming right down to the wire. Devan Downey (33pts, 1reb, 3ast, 2stl) followed up his epic performance in South Carolina's upset of #1 Kentucky with quite an encore against Georgia. This will be extremely frustrating for whichever team loses, as these two will likely finish 1-2 in scoring for Week 12.

Another outcome hanging in the balance will pit two frontcourt Tar Heels against each other on Sunday. After a slow start from everyone not named Cole Aldrich, Chalmers Chiefers got a great performance from DeShawn Sims (20pts, 12reb, 1ast, 1stl) against the Big Ten's punching bag, the Iowa Hawkeyes. Crimson & Bluebloods got some decent games from Greg Monroe (21pts, 5reb, 5ast, 1blk, 2stl) and Tracy Smith (23pts, 5reb, 1ast, 2blk) which should make it an interesting finish.

But the most intriguing matchup remaining is Boilers vs. Booo Joel. Despite a two-man disadvantage, the league's winless, last place team is in great position to pull off the upset. Boilers got another monster game from Quincy Pondexter (29pts, 12reb), but failed to land an early knockout blow during the week. Two double-doubles from Craig Brackins (27pts, 13reb, 1ast, 3blk, 1stl) and DeMarcus Cousins (21pts, 10reb, 1ast, 1blk, 2stl) have put Booo Joel's potential first win of the season within reach. It's quite ironic that Boilers will need to root against one of his own, in order to keep his 5-game winning streak intact.

[Sunday] In one of the most unexpected outcomes to date, Booo Joel got just enough out of JaJuan Johnson (13pts, 6reb, 1ast, 2blk) to notch their first victory on the season. With playoff hopes waving bye-bye weeks ago, Booo Joel will be playing spoiler the rest of the way. Another mathematically eliminated team is Maria Koppen, who has only won two games this season. Koppen's first round pick was Sunday's high scorer, as Trevor Booker (10pts, 16reb, 4ast, 2blk, 2stl) overcame a horrendous 2-for-16 shooting day to record his first double-double in over six weeks.

But the best finish of Week 12 was the best matchup all week. Going into the final day with the lead, Neenan's Warriors' Roy Williams and North Carolina (-8) were dominated in the Dean Dome by an upstart Virginia team. The loss by the Tar Heels choked away Neenan's Warriors' lead, allowing Paul Rudd > Ashley Judd to emerge victorious.

Fantasy College Hoops: Recap - Week 11

Here are the storylines for Week 11: Boilers continued their ascent to the top of the standings with a win over Chalmers Chiefers in the Game of the Week. As one of only two teams in the league to win 7 of their last 8 games, Boilers is surefire a contender for the rapidly approaching playoffs. And with his remaining schedule, I just don't see him dropping another game. Another team that is peaking at the right time: Neenan's Warriors. They have scored over 200 total points in two of the last three weeks. And it's hard to believe, but Maria Koppen and Booo Joel have now been officially eliminated from the playoffs. So no trades will be allowed to take place involving either of these two sad excuses for owners.

Fantasy College Hoops: Update - Week 11

[Monday] Behind Wesley Johnson (22pts, 8reb, 3ast, 1stl), Syracuse recorded its third conference road win in six days, defeating Notre Dame 84-71 in South Bend. The "Octagon of Doom" hosted Big Monday's marquee matchup, as Kansas St handed #1 Texas their first loss of the season. No starters were involved in the 71-62 upset, but a few things stood out to me. First, Vegas had Texas as a 1/2-point underdog, which I couldn't believe. Second, impressive - dare I say, classy? - postgame celebration by Wildcat nation... refusing to storm the court after pouring out their emotions in an intense game for the better part of 2+ hours. And lastly, voters were foaming at the mouth to crown Texas #1 before Kansas had even lost a game. But they obviously have some glaring weaknesses: mainly, 9-22 (41%) from the charity stripe last night. When it comes down to crunch time, free throws win and lose games... and Texas has been miserable (62%) all season long. Just something to think about before you automatically pencil-in the Longhorns for your March Madness brackets.

[Tuesday] The Game of the Week kicked off last night, as Matt Painter and #13 Purdue (-4) stopped a three-game slide, winning 84-78 over Illinois in Champaign. Although Boilers' entire roster is playing at a high level right now, a benched Joe Trapani (31pts, 6reb, 2ast) hit five three-pointers in a 79-75 win over Miami. In that same game, Neenan's Warriors benched Dwayne Collins (15pts, 11reb, 2blk, 1stl), who recorded his sixth double-double on the year. In only 20 minutes of playing time, his lowest output on the season, Gani Lawal (16pts, 10reb, 2blk, 1stl) led Georgia Tech to a 66-64 over Clemson. And finally, like a broken record, last night's high scorer was Evan Turner (20pts, 13reb, 8ast, 1blk, 2stl). He recorded his first double-double since returning from a back injury, which kept him out of the starting lineup for a month.

[Wednesday] Last night's games were all about the Game of the Week. Though Chalmers Chiefers didn't get much out of Cole Aldrich (10pts, 4reb, 2ast, 1stl), DeShawn Sims (23pts, 13reb, 1ast, 2blk, 2stl) ripped off a season-high 13 rebounds and his first double-double since mid-December. Boilers on the other hand is raking in the points. Despite warming the bench, Marshall Moses (20pts, 18reb, 2ast) has scored over 70 fantasy points over the last two weeks. Though he is still wildly inconsistent, Moses is keeping the pressure on Boilers' regulars to earn their starting spots. With Connecticut shorthanded, Stanley Robinson (18pts, 9reb, 3blk) helped the Huskies feast on an overmatched St. John's team. But Wednesday's best performance was Tasmin Mitchell (38pts, 10reb, 1ast), with a season-high 38 points on 15-22 shooting, including 4 three-pointers. There's no denying the Game of the Week just got a lot more interesting...

[Thursday] Boilers just keeps cruising along in the Game of the Week, thanks to Quincy Pondexter (23pts, 6reb, 2ast), who scored 20+ points for the third straight game. Conference games separate the men from the boys. Unfortunately for The Pink Jellybeans, Herb Pope (10pts, 7reb, 4ast, 1blk, 1stl) has clearly struggled in Big East play, committing four turnovers and fouling out in each of his last two games. Luckily for Seton Hall, Jeremy Hazell (25pts, 5reb, 2ast, 2stl) put on a clinic in a controversial win over Louisville. A scoring machine for Neenan's Warriors, Hazell has averaged 27+ points over the Pirates' last seven games.

[Friday] No players/games of record.

[Saturday] With only one starter remaining after Saturday's games, the majority of Week 11's matchups are in the books. Let's start with the Game of the Week, as Jamine Peterson (26pts, 10reb, 2ast, 3stl) helped Boilers defeat Chalmers Chiefers and move into second place. Providence ended up losing 109-105 to South Florida in overtime, courtesy of a career day by Dominique Jones (46pts, 10reb, 8ast, 3stl). Neenan's Warriors continued their hot streak, handing Gordon Bombay his third loss of the season. Once again, Ekpe Udoh (23pts, 7reb, 1ast, 7blk, 1stl) moved into the league's top 10 in scoring once again... in only 7 starts. God's on my side got yet another double-double from Luke Harangody (24pts, 11reb, 2ast, 2blk), but he was bested by Paul Rudd > Ashley Judd's Landry Fields (32pts, 8reb, 5ast, 3blk, 2stl). Newly acquired Marcus Gilstrap (18pts, 12reb, 2ast, 1blk, 1stl) delivered the knockout blow against The Pink Jellybeans in his first start of the season.

[Sunday] Week 11 wrapped up quietly, as only two players (1 starter) had yet to see action. God's on my side's Ashton Gibbs (23pts, 2reb) made all 14 of his free throw attempts, but shot on 4-for-15 from the floor in #9 Pittsburgh's 64-61 loss to Seton Hall.

Fantasy College Hoops: Recap - Week 10

Here are the storylines from Week 10: Apparently, Boilers felt his squad got hosed in the most recent power rankings. But they backed it up in the Game of the Week, taking down Crimson & Bluebloods and moving within one game of first place. Boilers better get used to the bright lights, because there's another Game of the Week in their near future. God's on my side has now won three of their last four games, including a big win over Chalmers Chiefers. The upcoming week is full of great matchups... But what do you expect? It's crunch time! Here's a look at the player rankings through Week 10:

Fantasy College Hoops: Update - Week 10

[Monday] Week 10 started out slowly, as only two players (1 starter) were in action last night. Samardo Samuels (21pts, 7reb, 4blk, 1stl) was perfect from the floor (4-4) and the free throw line (13-13). But Louisville couldn't hold onto an 17-point first half lead against Villanova, eventually crumbling down the stretch 92-84. Boilers got an unexpected double-double from Marshall Moses (16pts, 13reb, 1blk, 4stl), after scoring in the red twice over the past four weeks. Moses continues to be a difficult player to project as a starter, but missing out on 30+ nights like this always sting...

[Tuesday] The Game of the Week got under way last night, as Greivis Vasquez (30pts, 4reb, 7ast, 1stl) overcame a dreadful 9-27 shooting night, managing to score right at his season average. The Pink Jellybeans have slowly become a one-man team, but Al-Farouq Aminu (24pts, 13reb, 1ast, 3blk, 2stl) has posted 8 double-doubles in Wake Forest's last 11 games. Tuesday's marquee game featured Ohio State's trip to West Lafayette, and a return to the Paul Rudd > Ashley Judd's starting lineup for Evan Turner (32pts, 9reb, 3ast, 1stl). The Buckeyes were overmatched in the first half, tying Purdue's Robbie Hummel 29-29 at half. But Turner controlled the tempo down the stretch, ultimately handing the #6 Boilermakers their second straight loss.

[Wednesday] Boilers didn't get his usual production out of Tasmin Mitchell (13pts, 9reb, 5ast) or Stanley Robinson (19pts, 2reb, 1blk). It appears Week 10's Game of the Week will be a slugfest between two of the league's better teams. Crimson & Bluebloods' leader, Wesley Johnson (11pts, 10reb, 2ast, 1blk, 2stl) managed to double-double, but had his lowest scoring total in over a month. Wednesday's high scoring starter was Damion James (23pts, 14reb, 1ast, 2blk, 2stl) who has 7 double-doubles in his last 9 games for #1 Texas. A couple teams missed out on some great games, including The Pink Jellybeans' Avery Bradley (24pts, 6reb, 6ast, 3stl) and Boilers' Malcolm Delaney (28pts, 4reb, 9ast, 2stl). Hindsight is always 20/20, but these two teams have left quite a few points on the board this week.

[Thursday] The Game of the Week finally got some scoring, in the form of double-doubles from Jamine Peterson (16pts, 10reb, 2ast, 1blk, 2stl) and Quincy Pondexter (27pts, 10reb, 2ast, 3blk, 1stl), helping Boilers breathe easy for now. Gordon Bombay continued to pile on the points, with a banner day from Jerome Randle (39pts, 5reb, 9ast, 2stl). Randle went 7-12 from downtown, while setting season-highs in points, rebounds, assists and steals. On the bright side for WGP, Gordon Bombay is done for the week... But Thursday's top performer was Jarvis Varnado (17pts, 12reb, 1ast, 10blk, 1stl), who recorded the second triple-double of his career in a 82-80 win over Arkansas. My gut tells me the player of the week might be coming out of Starkville...

[Friday] No players/games of record.

[Saturday] On a day featuring 18 players, only two scored more than 25 fantasy points. Yancy Gates (11pts, 13reb) had his second double-double in as many weeks, and a game-winning bucket against Notre Dame. But Crimson & Bluebloods desperately need a shot in the arm that Patrick Patterson (12pts, 5reb, 3ast) and Ed Davis (12pts, 8reb, 4blk) couldn't provide. Boilers' Thursday night fireworks helped them hold on for a victory in the Game of the Week. Landry Fields (18pts, 10reb, 3ast, 1blk, 3stl) and a healthy Paul Rudd > Ashley Judd squad remain in playoff contention. God's on my side got a solid start from freshman Kenny Boynton (18pts, 3reb, 5ast, 1blk) in Florida's convincing 72-58 win over Louisiana St.

[Sunday] All six matchups were determined yesterday, but a few players had opportunities to pad their stats. WGP's matchup was out of reach before the weekend, but Lazar Hayward (22pts, 5reb, 1ast, 2stl) put together a nice game against Providence. Scottie Reynolds (27pts, 4reb, 1ast, 2stl) and #4 Villanova nearly squandered a second half lead to #11 Georgetown, but held on for a 82-77 win. Reynolds has been unconscious from downtown, making 23 of 35 (66%) three-pointers over his last 6 games. But will it be enough to earn his starting spot back in The Pink Jellybeans' lineup?

Fantasy College Hoops: Recap - Week 9

Here are the storylines from Week 9: The forfeits just keep rolling in for a couple of disappointing squads. If only they knew that they had two of the better teams in the league and can still make the playoffs... oh well. Chalmers Chiefers logged their third victory by forfeit over the last four weeks, translating into a five-game winning streak. After winning five of their last six, Boilers (6-3) will meet Crimson & Bluebloods (8-1) in a likely Game of the Week matchup for Week 10. But the biggest headline has to be Neenan's Warriors and their 233+ total points for the week. A team that struggled to put points on the board early in the season, Neenan's Warriors got a healthy dose of good news over the past week. Arkansas announced Courtney Fortson would return to the starting lineup for the first time all season. Now consider Jeremy Hazell's scoring (23.3 PPG), as well as regular double-doubles from Ekpe Udoh and Dwayne Collins. You're likely staring at team bound for the playoffs, after starting the season 0-4... quite the turnaround! Here's a look at the player rankings through Week 9:

Fantasy College Hoops: Update - Week 9

[Monday] With two Tar Heel starters (Marcus Ginyard, Will Graves) sidelined with ankle injuries, College of Charleston used a barrage of 13 three-pointers to stun #9 North Carolina in overtime. It was a disappointing loss, but Ed Davis (19pts, 16reb, 3ast, 5blk) now has three straight double-doubles for Crimson & Bluebloods. In his first start since Week 3, Cincinnati's Yancy Gates (16pts, 14reb, 2ast, 4blk, 2stl) recorded his first double-double since mid-November at the Maui Invitational. In Baton Rouge, Storm Warren (10pts, 5reb, 1blk) struggled with foul trouble for most of the night, failing to log at least 20 minutes for the first time all season. Warren's teammate and Boilers' Tasmin Mitchell (19pts, 11reb, 2ast, 2stl) now has six double-doubles in his last nine games for Louisiana St.

[Tuesday] We're only two days in, and the Game of the Week is already a shootout. Luke Harangody (36pts, 6reb, 1ast, 1stl) buried four three-pointers in Notre Dame's one-point victory over South Florida. Despite the close loss, Dominique Jones (26pts, 4reb, 5ast, 1stl) drained three three-pointers of his own, while playing all 40 minutes. Gani Lawal (21pts, 6reb, 1ast, 1stl) led #20 Georgia Tech in scoring, but was only 7-for-17 from the floor. It was a rough night for Yellow Jacket nation, losing 73-66 at Georgia's Stegeman Coliseum, where they haven't won since 1976. To make matters worse, their football team looked pathetic in last night's Orange Bowl, falling to Iowa 24-14. Georgia Tech's Josh Nesbitt completed a whopping two passes for 12 yards... but back to hoops. Boilers got another solid game from Boston College's Joe Trapani (18pts, 8reb, 2ast, 2blk, 1stl) in their 89-32 demolition of...... wait for it...... New Jersey Tech. New Jersey Tech? Really? Are they in the same conference as MIT? Actually, the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders are in the Great West in case anybody cared.

[Wednesday] God's on my side is doing everything they can to overcome a 1-player penalty in the Game of the Week. It was a Windy City homecoming for Duke's Jon Scheyer (31pts, 3reb, 4ast, 2stl), who hails from Northbrook, Illinois. He buried four three-pointers against Iowa St, making it 16 treys in his last four games. Aids' Jerome Dyson (16pts, 9reb, 10ast, 1stl) led five Huskies in double-figures, and has 10 assists in each of his last two games. While Dyson fell one rebound shy of a triple-double, Ekpe Udoh (18pts, 17reb, 3ast, 10blk) recorded the fifth triple-double in Baylor history, during their 79-63 win over Morgan St. I would be shocked if anyone matches his unbelievable 93+ point performance the rest of the way. After barely sniffing the top 50 in the player rankings, Udoh's monster game moved him into the top 10 - in only five starts.

[Thursday] No players/games of record.

[Friday] Today's only players were Boilers' Nic Wise (15pts, 4ast, 4stl) and Chalmers Chiefers' Klay Thompson (19pts, 8reb, 4ast, 1blk), in a head-to-head matchup. DeAngelo Casto of Washington St hit a layup with 0.1 seconds left, sinking Arizona to 7-8 (1-2) on the year.

[Saturday] There were only a couple notable performances from today's games, as only 5 of 13 starters scored 25+ fantasy points. The Seton Hall Pirates sailed past the #25 Cincinnati Bearcats 83-76, behind five three-pointers from sharpshooting Jeremy Hazell (33pts, 2reb, 2ast, 4stl). He now has scored 30+ in three of his last five games. But Saturday's high score went to Boilers' Jamine Peterson (29pts, 20reb, 1blk, 1stl). After scoring a season-low (3) his last game, Peterson poured in a season-high 29 points on 11-18 shooting in Providence's 94-81 win over Rutgers.

[Sunday] The headline of the day was top-ranked Kansas receiving their first blemish of the season, courtesy of a shorthanded Tennessee team. Cole Aldrich (7pts, 18reb, 4blk) dominated the boards all game, but only shot 3-for-5, and failed to get a decent amount of touches. Sherron Collins (22pts, 4reb, 5ast) led Kansas in scoring, but did not have one of his better games. Collins was one of the few Jayhawks not getting outhustled for most of the game, but clearly felt the pressure of carrying the whole team. Sunday's top scorer was a familiar face: Manny Harris (24pts, 9reb, 3ast, 2stl). Despite Michigan's home loss to Northwestern, Harris and fellow Wolverine DeShawn Sims (17pts, 8reb, 1ast, 3blk) combined for 41 of Michigan's 68 total points (60%).

Fantasy College Hoops: Power Rankings #2

With a great Christmas in everyone's rear view mirror, it's time to get down to business. I've made my lists and checked them twice! Now it's time to wrap up this decade with the second round of Fantasy College Hoops Power Rankings. Here is a breakdown of the five categories:

- Naughty: Who's been a lump of coal for their squad?
- Nice: Who's shooting is as sweet as a Red Ryder BB gun?
- Biggest surprise: Something unexpected (good/bad) so far...
- Coaching grade: How effective are you at managing your squad?
- New Year's resolution: Popular sayings applicable to each team.

Fantasy College Hoops: Preview - Week 9

Boilers (5-3) vs. Maria Koppen (2-6)
Booo Joel (0-8) vs. Chalmers Chiefers (6-2)
