Fantasy College Hoops: Update - Week 11
[Monday] Behind Wesley Johnson (22pts, 8reb, 3ast, 1stl), Syracuse recorded its third conference road win in six days, defeating Notre Dame 84-71 in South Bend. The "Octagon of Doom" hosted Big Monday's marquee matchup, as Kansas St handed #1 Texas their first loss of the season. No starters were involved in the 71-62 upset, but a few things stood out to me. First, Vegas had Texas as a 1/2-point underdog, which I couldn't believe. Second, impressive - dare I say, classy? - postgame celebration by Wildcat nation... refusing to storm the court after pouring out their emotions in an intense game for the better part of 2+ hours. And lastly, voters were foaming at the mouth to crown Texas #1 before Kansas had even lost a game. But they obviously have some glaring weaknesses: mainly, 9-22 (41%) from the charity stripe last night. When it comes down to crunch time, free throws win and lose games... and Texas has been miserable (62%) all season long. Just something to think about before you automatically pencil-in the Longhorns for your March Madness brackets.
[Tuesday] The Game of the Week kicked off last night, as Matt Painter and #13 Purdue (-4) stopped a three-game slide, winning 84-78 over Illinois in Champaign. Although Boilers' entire roster is playing at a high level right now, a benched Joe Trapani (31pts, 6reb, 2ast) hit five three-pointers in a 79-75 win over Miami. In that same game, Neenan's Warriors benched Dwayne Collins (15pts, 11reb, 2blk, 1stl), who recorded his sixth double-double on the year. In only 20 minutes of playing time, his lowest output on the season, Gani Lawal (16pts, 10reb, 2blk, 1stl) led Georgia Tech to a 66-64 over Clemson. And finally, like a broken record, last night's high scorer was Evan Turner (20pts, 13reb, 8ast, 1blk, 2stl). He recorded his first double-double since returning from a back injury, which kept him out of the starting lineup for a month.
[Wednesday] Last night's games were all about the Game of the Week. Though Chalmers Chiefers didn't get much out of Cole Aldrich (10pts, 4reb, 2ast, 1stl), DeShawn Sims (23pts, 13reb, 1ast, 2blk, 2stl) ripped off a season-high 13 rebounds and his first double-double since mid-December. Boilers on the other hand is raking in the points. Despite warming the bench, Marshall Moses (20pts, 18reb, 2ast) has scored over 70 fantasy points over the last two weeks. Though he is still wildly inconsistent, Moses is keeping the pressure on Boilers' regulars to earn their starting spots. With Connecticut shorthanded, Stanley Robinson (18pts, 9reb, 3blk) helped the Huskies feast on an overmatched St. John's team. But Wednesday's best performance was Tasmin Mitchell (38pts, 10reb, 1ast), with a season-high 38 points on 15-22 shooting, including 4 three-pointers. There's no denying the Game of the Week just got a lot more interesting...
[Thursday] Boilers just keeps cruising along in the Game of the Week, thanks to Quincy Pondexter (23pts, 6reb, 2ast), who scored 20+ points for the third straight game. Conference games separate the men from the boys. Unfortunately for The Pink Jellybeans, Herb Pope (10pts, 7reb, 4ast, 1blk, 1stl) has clearly struggled in Big East play, committing four turnovers and fouling out in each of his last two games. Luckily for Seton Hall, Jeremy Hazell (25pts, 5reb, 2ast, 2stl) put on a clinic in a controversial win over Louisville. A scoring machine for Neenan's Warriors, Hazell has averaged 27+ points over the Pirates' last seven games.
[Friday] No players/games of record.
[Saturday] With only one starter remaining after Saturday's games, the majority of Week 11's matchups are in the books. Let's start with the Game of the Week, as Jamine Peterson (26pts, 10reb, 2ast, 3stl) helped Boilers defeat Chalmers Chiefers and move into second place. Providence ended up losing 109-105 to South Florida in overtime, courtesy of a career day by Dominique Jones (46pts, 10reb, 8ast, 3stl). Neenan's Warriors continued their hot streak, handing Gordon Bombay his third loss of the season. Once again, Ekpe Udoh (23pts, 7reb, 1ast, 7blk, 1stl) moved into the league's top 10 in scoring once again... in only 7 starts. God's on my side got yet another double-double from Luke Harangody (24pts, 11reb, 2ast, 2blk), but he was bested by Paul Rudd > Ashley Judd's Landry Fields (32pts, 8reb, 5ast, 3blk, 2stl). Newly acquired Marcus Gilstrap (18pts, 12reb, 2ast, 1blk, 1stl) delivered the knockout blow against The Pink Jellybeans in his first start of the season.
[Sunday] Week 11 wrapped up quietly, as only two players (1 starter) had yet to see action. God's on my side's Ashton Gibbs (23pts, 2reb) made all 14 of his free throw attempts, but shot on 4-for-15 from the floor in #9 Pittsburgh's 64-61 loss to Seton Hall.
