Fantasy College Hoops: Update - Week 9

[Monday] With two Tar Heel starters (Marcus Ginyard, Will Graves) sidelined with ankle injuries, College of Charleston used a barrage of 13 three-pointers to stun #9 North Carolina in overtime. It was a disappointing loss, but Ed Davis (19pts, 16reb, 3ast, 5blk) now has three straight double-doubles for Crimson & Bluebloods. In his first start since Week 3, Cincinnati's Yancy Gates (16pts, 14reb, 2ast, 4blk, 2stl) recorded his first double-double since mid-November at the Maui Invitational. In Baton Rouge, Storm Warren (10pts, 5reb, 1blk) struggled with foul trouble for most of the night, failing to log at least 20 minutes for the first time all season. Warren's teammate and Boilers' Tasmin Mitchell (19pts, 11reb, 2ast, 2stl) now has six double-doubles in his last nine games for Louisiana St.

[Tuesday] We're only two days in, and the Game of the Week is already a shootout. Luke Harangody (36pts, 6reb, 1ast, 1stl) buried four three-pointers in Notre Dame's one-point victory over South Florida. Despite the close loss, Dominique Jones (26pts, 4reb, 5ast, 1stl) drained three three-pointers of his own, while playing all 40 minutes. Gani Lawal (21pts, 6reb, 1ast, 1stl) led #20 Georgia Tech in scoring, but was only 7-for-17 from the floor. It was a rough night for Yellow Jacket nation, losing 73-66 at Georgia's Stegeman Coliseum, where they haven't won since 1976. To make matters worse, their football team looked pathetic in last night's Orange Bowl, falling to Iowa 24-14. Georgia Tech's Josh Nesbitt completed a whopping two passes for 12 yards... but back to hoops. Boilers got another solid game from Boston College's Joe Trapani (18pts, 8reb, 2ast, 2blk, 1stl) in their 89-32 demolition of...... wait for it...... New Jersey Tech. New Jersey Tech? Really? Are they in the same conference as MIT? Actually, the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders are in the Great West in case anybody cared.

[Wednesday] God's on my side is doing everything they can to overcome a 1-player penalty in the Game of the Week. It was a Windy City homecoming for Duke's Jon Scheyer (31pts, 3reb, 4ast, 2stl), who hails from Northbrook, Illinois. He buried four three-pointers against Iowa St, making it 16 treys in his last four games. Aids' Jerome Dyson (16pts, 9reb, 10ast, 1stl) led five Huskies in double-figures, and has 10 assists in each of his last two games. While Dyson fell one rebound shy of a triple-double, Ekpe Udoh (18pts, 17reb, 3ast, 10blk) recorded the fifth triple-double in Baylor history, during their 79-63 win over Morgan St. I would be shocked if anyone matches his unbelievable 93+ point performance the rest of the way. After barely sniffing the top 50 in the player rankings, Udoh's monster game moved him into the top 10 - in only five starts.

[Thursday] No players/games of record.

[Friday] Today's only players were Boilers' Nic Wise (15pts, 4ast, 4stl) and Chalmers Chiefers' Klay Thompson (19pts, 8reb, 4ast, 1blk), in a head-to-head matchup. DeAngelo Casto of Washington St hit a layup with 0.1 seconds left, sinking Arizona to 7-8 (1-2) on the year.

[Saturday] There were only a couple notable performances from today's games, as only 5 of 13 starters scored 25+ fantasy points. The Seton Hall Pirates sailed past the #25 Cincinnati Bearcats 83-76, behind five three-pointers from sharpshooting Jeremy Hazell (33pts, 2reb, 2ast, 4stl). He now has scored 30+ in three of his last five games. But Saturday's high score went to Boilers' Jamine Peterson (29pts, 20reb, 1blk, 1stl). After scoring a season-low (3) his last game, Peterson poured in a season-high 29 points on 11-18 shooting in Providence's 94-81 win over Rutgers.

[Sunday] The headline of the day was top-ranked Kansas receiving their first blemish of the season, courtesy of a shorthanded Tennessee team. Cole Aldrich (7pts, 18reb, 4blk) dominated the boards all game, but only shot 3-for-5, and failed to get a decent amount of touches. Sherron Collins (22pts, 4reb, 5ast) led Kansas in scoring, but did not have one of his better games. Collins was one of the few Jayhawks not getting outhustled for most of the game, but clearly felt the pressure of carrying the whole team. Sunday's top scorer was a familiar face: Manny Harris (24pts, 9reb, 3ast, 2stl). Despite Michigan's home loss to Northwestern, Harris and fellow Wolverine DeShawn Sims (17pts, 8reb, 1ast, 3blk) combined for 41 of Michigan's 68 total points (60%).
