Fantasy College Hoops: Update - Week 10
[Monday] Week 10 started out slowly, as only two players (1 starter) were in action last night. Samardo Samuels (21pts, 7reb, 4blk, 1stl) was perfect from the floor (4-4) and the free throw line (13-13). But Louisville couldn't hold onto an 17-point first half lead against Villanova, eventually crumbling down the stretch 92-84. Boilers got an unexpected double-double from Marshall Moses (16pts, 13reb, 1blk, 4stl), after scoring in the red twice over the past four weeks. Moses continues to be a difficult player to project as a starter, but missing out on 30+ nights like this always sting...
[Tuesday] The Game of the Week got under way last night, as Greivis Vasquez (30pts, 4reb, 7ast, 1stl) overcame a dreadful 9-27 shooting night, managing to score right at his season average. The Pink Jellybeans have slowly become a one-man team, but Al-Farouq Aminu (24pts, 13reb, 1ast, 3blk, 2stl) has posted 8 double-doubles in Wake Forest's last 11 games. Tuesday's marquee game featured Ohio State's trip to West Lafayette, and a return to the Paul Rudd > Ashley Judd's starting lineup for Evan Turner (32pts, 9reb, 3ast, 1stl). The Buckeyes were overmatched in the first half, tying Purdue's Robbie Hummel 29-29 at half. But Turner controlled the tempo down the stretch, ultimately handing the #6 Boilermakers their second straight loss.
[Wednesday] Boilers didn't get his usual production out of Tasmin Mitchell (13pts, 9reb, 5ast) or Stanley Robinson (19pts, 2reb, 1blk). It appears Week 10's Game of the Week will be a slugfest between two of the league's better teams. Crimson & Bluebloods' leader, Wesley Johnson (11pts, 10reb, 2ast, 1blk, 2stl) managed to double-double, but had his lowest scoring total in over a month. Wednesday's high scoring starter was Damion James (23pts, 14reb, 1ast, 2blk, 2stl) who has 7 double-doubles in his last 9 games for #1 Texas. A couple teams missed out on some great games, including The Pink Jellybeans' Avery Bradley (24pts, 6reb, 6ast, 3stl) and Boilers' Malcolm Delaney (28pts, 4reb, 9ast, 2stl). Hindsight is always 20/20, but these two teams have left quite a few points on the board this week.
[Thursday] The Game of the Week finally got some scoring, in the form of double-doubles from Jamine Peterson (16pts, 10reb, 2ast, 1blk, 2stl) and Quincy Pondexter (27pts, 10reb, 2ast, 3blk, 1stl), helping Boilers breathe easy for now. Gordon Bombay continued to pile on the points, with a banner day from Jerome Randle (39pts, 5reb, 9ast, 2stl). Randle went 7-12 from downtown, while setting season-highs in points, rebounds, assists and steals. On the bright side for WGP, Gordon Bombay is done for the week... But Thursday's top performer was Jarvis Varnado (17pts, 12reb, 1ast, 10blk, 1stl), who recorded the second triple-double of his career in a 82-80 win over Arkansas. My gut tells me the player of the week might be coming out of Starkville...
[Friday] No players/games of record.
[Saturday] On a day featuring 18 players, only two scored more than 25 fantasy points. Yancy Gates (11pts, 13reb) had his second double-double in as many weeks, and a game-winning bucket against Notre Dame. But Crimson & Bluebloods desperately need a shot in the arm that Patrick Patterson (12pts, 5reb, 3ast) and Ed Davis (12pts, 8reb, 4blk) couldn't provide. Boilers' Thursday night fireworks helped them hold on for a victory in the Game of the Week. Landry Fields (18pts, 10reb, 3ast, 1blk, 3stl) and a healthy Paul Rudd > Ashley Judd squad remain in playoff contention. God's on my side got a solid start from freshman Kenny Boynton (18pts, 3reb, 5ast, 1blk) in Florida's convincing 72-58 win over Louisiana St.
[Sunday] All six matchups were determined yesterday, but a few players had opportunities to pad their stats. WGP's matchup was out of reach before the weekend, but Lazar Hayward (22pts, 5reb, 1ast, 2stl) put together a nice game against Providence. Scottie Reynolds (27pts, 4reb, 1ast, 2stl) and #4 Villanova nearly squandered a second half lead to #11 Georgetown, but held on for a 82-77 win. Reynolds has been unconscious from downtown, making 23 of 35 (66%) three-pointers over his last 6 games. But will it be enough to earn his starting spot back in The Pink Jellybeans' lineup?
