Fantasy College Hoops: Sunday - Week 1
What a way to kickoff fantasy college hoops! There couldn't have been six closer matchups. This was certainly one of the craziest weeks in recent memory. Let's start with the Game of the Week. Down by 33+, Neenan's Warriors knew they needed a superhuman performance from their first round pick, Jeremy Hazell (28pts, 2ast, 1blk, 1stl). Despite pouring in 28 points while shooting 8-for-11 from the field, their comeback fell just short against Sutton & Sons.
One of the best known Yogi-isms would fit perfectly to Week 1's Sinovic Bowl: "It ain't over 'til it's over." Not even a 90-point lead for Chalmers Chiefers was safe on this day. Gordon Bombay's three-headed monster of Wisconsin's Jon Leuer (24pts, 7reb, 1ast, 3blk), Maryland's Jordan Williams (20pts, 11reb, 1blk) and Purdue's JaJuan Johnson (10pts, 12reb, 5blk, 1stl) all posted 30+ point games, capping a ridiculous comeback against big brother. It's an early gut-check for Chalmers Chiefers, as this one will sting for a while.
The defending National Champion Duke Blue Devils' opener against Princeton highlighted a head-to-head matchup of backcourt teammates: Boilers' Nolan Smith (22pts, 4reb, 6ast, 2stl) against Kyrie Irving (17pts, 4reb, 9ast, 1blk, 2stl) of Crimson & Bluebloods. The frosh from St. Patrick's in New Jersey had a dazzling debut in front of the Cameron Crazies. After trading blows for seven days, these two teams ended up as two of the top three scoring teams this week. Lucky for me, Crimson & Bluebloods was able to crawl away from this battle royale with a hard earned victory.
Here's a look at the final scoreboard for Week 1.
